My first impression of this bag is that it’s cool, sleek and compact. The fabric is a black plasticized nylon, the buckles, straps and handles accent the bag and give it a futuristic style. It looks like a backpack a storm trooper would wear. The appeal doesn’t stop at the appearance, however, this bag is functional.

The design is modular, meaning the compartments can be used for clothes, photography gear, or anything else, and can be rearranged in countless configurations. Set it up with just clothes, or with a full set of photography gear, plus clothes.

The ingenious exterior zippers make it easy to access (hence the name) the interior compartments from the outside without unzipping the main clamshell compartment. This makes accessing your gear in the field a snap.

By opening the top panel, you are able to access the gear in the small side of the clamshell without opening the main compartment. The side panels allow you to access the rest of your gear on the larger side of the clamshell. This feature makes it simple and easy to get to your stuff.

The WANDRD Hexad Access Duffel is high on functionality, but without sacrificing quality. The outside material is military-grade plasticized ballistic nylon, for water-resistant strength. While inside the padded laptop sleeve, mesh separators, and optional Camera Cube keep your gear from being damaged and scratched.

The zippers all have pull tabs for ease of use, and on the main compartment they are lockable for added security. The backpack straps and the side straps are removable, with a storage pocket, if you choose to go without them. The straps also have a carrying handle built in, making for an ingenious way to carry the bag with the need for an extra handle.

The WANDRD Hexad Access Duffel is also comfortable, while testing a fully packed bag, it fit well and was equally comfortable on a 5’10” male as it was on a 5’4” female.

Packing Examples –Traveler and Photographer

The Wandrd Hexad Access Duffel was designed for both the traveler seeking more organization, and the travel photographer with a versatile packing solution in mind. There are several ways to organize this pack, depending on your gear.

Because this bag is so versatile, I decided to experiment with 2 different packing configurations using the WANDRD Hexad Access Duffel: a Traveler Packing for Europe with cold weather clothes and minimal electronics, and Packing for the Travel Photographer, with a full set of photography gear, plus clothes.

Packing for Europe with the WANDRD Hexad Access Duffel

In this scenario I will show you how to fully utilize the features and compartments in this bag by packing for a cold-weather trip to Europe. I am traveling to Ireland in September, so this is a perfect experiment.

This bag will store much more than you should need a European trip of any length of time. My philosophy is to pack for a full week, then do laundry and restock supplies as needed.

In this experiment I pack a full week’s worth of clothes, this includes: 7 t-shirts, 2 short-sleeve button-up shirts, 1 long-sleeve button-up dress shirt, 3 pairs of pants, a wool jacket, 7 sets of socks and underwear, a long underwear top and bottom, a jacket, and a swim suit.

Supplies include a full set of toiletries, travel umbrella, sunglasses, pack towel, foldable daypack, phone, power adapter, charging cables, and padlocks. For my full list of travel gear read this post.

The WANDRD Hexad Access Duffel does not come with packing cubes, and because of the compartments, you don’t really need them. However, I’m an organizational nut, and cubes make my life easier, so I use them for most of my travels.

With the clamshell open, it’s a cinch to pack your clothes into the larger side of the duffel, and your toiletries and miscellaneous items into the other side.

The top and side panels allow you to access the gear in every compartment of the bag without opening the main compartment.

By utilizing the optional Camera Cube this bag can be packed in almost exactly the same way. Simply replace one of the packing cubes for the Camera Cube in the clamshell compartment. The side straps are designed to snugly secure a tripod to the outside of the bag.

The side panel is designed to allow easy access to your camera gear without having to open the main compartment. Simply open the Camera Cube and fold the flap inside the Access panel. Voila!
