Intro

Today I’m going to share with you a minimalist travel charger I’ve been using for the past 6 months or so. I still like the CARD travel adapter I’ve been using for years, but with the introduction of GaN technology travel adapters have been getting much smaller and more powerful.

Weight and Dimensions

The one I have here is by Minix and comes in two sizes. This is the smaller 66W 3-port version, it also comes in a slightly larger, but more powerful 100W version which has 4 ports.

Comparing this adapter to some other models: An older non-GaN style Anker charger which is the same 65W power with 3-ports, is much much larger than the Minix charger which uses GaN technology.

And then to show you this adapter compared to the CARD: The Minix is 66W total output, while the CARD is 45W and about twice as large. However all the adapters are built into the CARD, while you have to carry them separately with the MINIX.

Adapters

I think the separate adapters can be both a good and a bad feature. For example, if I’m traveling within the US then the main power block is all I have to take. However if you’re traveling netween countries with multiple adapter types then you may have to take all three pieces. It does come with a little drawstring bag, however it’s not quite large enough to hold the charger and both adapters.

Connecting the Adapters

Like most universal travel adapters the Minix comes with the standard Type A (USA), Type G (UK), and Type C (Europe). However the type a doesn’t swivel to convert into a type I plug. Which means you can’t use this in countries like Australia and Argentina.

As far as connecting the adapters go, it’s quite easy. The A Plug just flips down from the charger to plug into the wall. The type G and C adapters are going to slide in from the top with the A plug folded in. There are two little slots on the back of the adapter that line up with the Type-A prongs. You get them lined up and it just pops right in.

Power Capacity

Now let’s look at the power capacity on the Minix charger. This version has 3 ports, 2 USB-C and one USB-A, with a total output of 65 watts. This is far more power than you need for a typical cell phone which typically draws between 5-18 watts.

However, the 65 watts will allow you to charge most laptops with a type C power deliver port. You can check on your laptops power requirements on the cord. The black box should have a little number on it. If yours is higher than 65, this will still work, but will just charge slower and may put additional strain on the charger. So if that’s the case you may want to look into the larger 100W version of the Minix charger.

And also keep in mind that the 65 watts is the max output for a single device plugged into either of the 65W USB-C ports. However if you plug two devices into the charger it’s going to split the output. For example, if you plug in two USB-C devices each will receive a max of 30 watts each. If you plug in a third device, it’s going to cut the Output of each plug even more.

For example, because the draw on a cell charger is typically not more than 18W, you could plug in two cell phones and a table and charge all 3 of them just fine. But because laptops tend to need more power, you probably wouldn’t be able to charge two laptops at the same time with this charger.

Summary

In summary, this is a great little travel adapter. It has lots of power in a tiny little package, at a decent price. The 65 watt output and 3 ports makes this a great choice for most travelers, unless you have a high-powered laptop, or just a ton of electronics. In that case they do make a slightly larger version with 100 watt output and 4 ports.
