Intro

In this post I’ll be comparing two ultralight toiletry pouches by Sea to Summit. The Traveling Light Hanging Toiletry Bag and the See Pouch, both in the small size.

Dimensions

I really like the Hanging toiletry pouch and I’ve featured it in previous posts. But I thought it would be interesting to have a look at it next to the much more minimalist Sea to Summit See Pouch.

The comparison isn’t going to be exact because the See Pouch is quite a bit smaller than the Hanging Toiletry Bag. It’s just 8.5” x 4” x 2” inches (22 x 10 x 5 cm) with a capacity of just under 1 liter. While the small Hanging Toiletry Bag here is 9” x 6” x 3” (23 x 15 x 8cm) with at least double the capacity

However, these bags both come in multiple sizes. A comparable volume for the See Pouch vs the Hanging Bag would be the Medium. It also comes in a gigantic 11 x 8 x 3 size which will be about 4 times the capacity of the small version here.

Weight

The good thing about the See Pouch is the weight is extremely low for all sizes. The smallest bag here is just under 1 oz, or about 25 g. While the largest size is still only 1.4 or, or about 40 g.

The Hanging toiletry bag here on the other hand has way more features which makes it about 3 times heavier than the See Pouch. The small size here weighs in at 2.9 oz or 82 g, while the large size is 4.7 oz or 133 g.

Materials and Durability

The quality on these bags is similar, both using an ultralight sil-nylon ripstop. The hanging bag is a slightly thicker 50 denier, while the See Pouch is uses a 30. However, you can barely notice a difference.

Sea to Summit likes to use these tiny off-brand zippers for some reason, and they look cheap. However, I’ve had the Hanging toiletry bag for about 2 years. I use it all the time and haven’t had any issues with these zippers. So, while I haven’t had the See Pouch this long, I would imagine it will be just as durable

Functionality

If you have a decent number of toiletries and you like them well organized, it’s hard to beat the Hanging Toiletry Bag. I think the biggest advantage of this pouch is the hook it lets you hang it up in the bathroom. This gives you easy access to these two slim mesh pockets on top as well as the large bottom compartment with a mesh divider.

This bottom area is great for silicone bottles because you can stack them in here and they’re going to stay upright. This bag additionally comes with a detachable mini mirror as well as a large, zippered pocket on the back.

The See Pouch however is extremely lightweight but has almost no features. It’s really just a small, tapered pouch with a clear front. It has these two little loops on the corners but the hole in these is almost too small to even hang on a bathroom hook.

Cost and Value

There’s also quite a large price disparity between these two bags. The hanging toiletry bag small size is almost $40 while the See Pouch small and medium size are both under $20.

Now as an example, I’ll pack both these pouches up so you can see what you can fit in them. First I’ll start with the larger Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag. This is the packing list of what I’ll be putting in the bag.

  • Shampoo in silicone bottle
  • Castile soap (2 oz)
  • Bar soap (in cloth bag)
  • Deodorant (Crystal)
  • Sunscreen (2 oz)
  • Pill bottles
  • Toothpaste
  • Comb
  • Toothbrush
  • Floss
  • Razor
  • Hair gel
  • Mirror

This is what the bag looks like fully packed, the weigh in totals 1 lb 6.3 oz (633 g).

Next I’ll take a few items out to pack the See Pouch because it’s so much smaller. Here is the reduced packing list:

Summary

In summary, these are both great pouches. I tend to use the Sea to Summit on longer trips because I like the zippered pockets and the hanging hook. However, if you’re more minimalist than me, or if you’re just going on a quick weekend trip and don’t need to carry much. Then the See Pouch is one of the lightest toiletry bags you can buy,
