Although the instructions and packaging refer to the "foil cutting wheel" in the singular tense, there are actually 2 wheels which I only discovered by turning the unit over and seeing the back side. There is also a guide to keep the wheels in the right place on the bottle which makes cutting the foil faster and way neater than those goofy serrated knives on other corkscrews that are useless at best. I always thought that the TSA objected to the 2 1/2" screws with the very pointy end and not the 1" blade. I noticed that some reviewers comment that the thing fell apart quickly but I suspect, judging by the photos, that the are not referring to this unit specifically. I have opened about a dozen bottles and the corkscrew is still tight and performing well.

I used to work in wineries and I always had one or two corkscrews stashed in my work pants pockets every day. By the end of the week, I would end up with 3-4 corkscrews on my dresser top at home. My winery days are behind me now, and my corkscrew stash is down to one last survivor. Corkscrews seem to disappear in my house, probably proportional to the number of guests and amount of wine being consumed. It is hard to go on-line and know I am buying a sturdy metal design that is not too flimsy.

These were a highly rated, simple looking design, so I ordered one.

Good points: strong metal, sturdy design. This corkscrew should last forever. The blade or foil cutter is sharp enough to cut the foil easily, which is helpful. I have tried to use brand-new corkscrews with dull foil cutters and they are USELESS.

Negative points: The difference between a simple waiter's corkscrew and this design is the addition of a second "slide step" on the opener arm that fits onto the bottle's lip. The opener arm is quite long, to accommodate the second "slide step". To be honest, I don't need the second "slide step" at all. Using my usual technique, I line up the tip of the worm onto the center of the corkscrew. Then I screw the "worm" all the way down the cork and then reverse and unscrew the worm until the gap between the opener arm and the bottle lip is the right size and I can fit the step snugly onto the bottle's lip. And pull the lever. "Pop!" Voila! I have never met a bottle I could not open using this technique. If the wine is extremely cold, the corks can be difficult to remove, but it is always doable. Furthermore, if the wine is that cold, it is probably colder than it should be for recommended consumption. This would happen if we were at an outdoor function and the wine bottles were at the very bottom of the cooler - most wine is NOT recommended to be served so cold.

On this model, using the novel second "slide step" first, pulling the lever, and then using the main step, could make it easier for some people without the arm strength necessary for the simpler, one step design. I found it annoying because I didn't need it and I had to unscrew the worm back out further than usual, just to use the original step, because of the lengthened opener arm.

I find all these fancy, overly complicated corkscrew designs annoying. My boyfriend actually had to show me how to use the fancy second step, and now I can see how it might be helpful to some people who lack the arm strength.

If you are lacking arm strength, you would probably find the weight of the metal lever handle a bit unwieldy. The extra weight isn't necessary, the lever hinge should be doing most of the work. And the extra weight makes this corkscrew not very pocket friendly. It is quite hefty for a waiter's design corkscrew. Maybe my guests will be less likely to walk away with it due to the extra weightiness?

I gave it 4 stars because the price was right, it is not flimsy, should last forever, and it generally works.

IMHO, I think people don't learn how to open a wine bottle properly using a simple design, and they are then handicapped into using these overly fancy designs which jack up the material costs and the price. For sanity's sake, go to a wine bar, winery, or wine store, learn how to open a bottle properly with a simple design, and forget about the yuppie bottle openers. Don't even get me started on the "winged" butterfly designs...

I just bought another one of these which, is a great review unto itself. The first one has been opening bottles just fine and has, thus far, not been confiscated by TSA. Here's the good news: they've redone the packaging for this product. No longer does it come in a plastic box, just on a card which is less environmentally disastrous.

Just keep in mind that, while emblazoned with "TSA Compliant," this product has no actual TSA imprimatur; no product does because the TSA does not grant such pre-approval for any products. So, the nomenclature on this product is no guarantee that it will pass TSA -- or any other security checkpoint -- requirements. This corkscrew does meet all currrent TSA criteria for carriage in carry-on luggage and the nomenclature on it should help evidence this to a security screener, but there is no guarantee. Also, it is best to put your corkscrew in an easily-accessed pocket of your bag and remove it and place it in the change tray with your other minor metal items, keys, coins, etc. this will speed you, and your corkscrew, through the line.

First, be aware that having the words "TSA Compliant" emblazoned on an item does NOT guarantee that that item will come through airport security. TSA Agents in the field may refuse any item arbitrarily. And TSA can -- and does -- change the rules frequently... for good reasons, we hope. BUT, this corkscrew does meet all current TSA requirements and it should be allowed in carry-on baggage.

It's sturdy and should hold up to use. It's a two-step-style waiter's screw which is really nice giving you the leverage to remove tight corks and the control to gently finesse out weak or compromised corks. The bottle cap lifter (a.k.a. "church key") on the end is also a nice thing to have along when traveling.

Here's a tip: any TSA inspector who spots a corkscrew on an X-Ray (and they have a fairly distinctive shape and show up well) is going to want to inspect that corkscrew since many do have a blade associated with them. The TSA Compliant nomenclature does not show up in the X-Ray. So, you will still be stopped and have to dig your corkscrew out of your bag practically every time. So, put your corkscrew in an easy-to-access pocket, take it out of your bag as you approach the checkpoint, and put it in a change tray along with other minor metal items. The inspector will give it a quick once-over and you'll be on your way.

So, why, you may wonder, only four stars? The answer is that this item arrives in a plastic box with a plastic foam lining way over-packaged and you end up just throwing that box and foam material away and sending it to the landfill. This over-packaging is completely unnecessary.

The product works as advertised.
It is the second such product I have owned. I find the design great.
The one drawback of this version of the product is that the tip of the corkscrew is flat and not pointed downward and centered.
What this means is that the corkscrew ends up digging into the cork near the edge (between the cork and the bottle neck)
This leads to a higher risk of cork breakage.
