Humangear Stax Comparison Intro

I recently posted a video review on the set of small Stax containers. They’re lightweight, waterproof, and great for storing small amounts of liquids which works great for travel toiletries. These containers also come in several size options and I thought it was worth having a look the medium and large sizes.

Feature Overview

The features are nearly identical on all these sets, the main difference being the size.

Utility

They all have the same great interchangeable snapping feature. Letting you mix and match the order and lock them all together into one big set .The handle also twists off so you can switch them around and make any of them the top.

One cool feature that the medium and large set has is the lid can disconnect from one side. Working kind of like a carabiner, so you can clip it on to something. And you can’t disconnect it when it’s attached to the tub so it’s not going to pop off.

Waterproofness

From my testing so far the waterproof seal works great. I’ve had the small set for about 4 months now, I keep liquids in two of them and I haven’t had any leaks at all.

Travel Liquids

If you’re going to use Stax to hold liquids for carry on travel the only sets that will work are the small and the medium. The cutoff limit for travel is 100 ml or 3.4 oz .All 4 of the Small Stax are well below 100ml, with the largest being 40ml or 1.3 oz.

Sizes

Note: 1 ml = 1cc

In the Medium set we have two at 60ml, one 100ml and largest is 140 ml which is above the carry-on limit. All 4 of the tubs in the large set are above the 100 ml limit. The two smallest large containers are 120, medium is 200ml, and largest is 270 which is about 9 oz.

You can basically separate them into two groups. All the smaller ones will all work for carry on travel liquids and all of these are too big. The smallest medium works as carryon, while the largest in the medium set and all the tubs in the large set are too large.

Utility

I tend to not carry a ton of liquids when I travel so I find the smalls set works great for me. I keep shampoo, castille soap, and pills and tooth tabs in the smallest containers. However, the biggest container in the small set is only 1.3 oz which is way lower than the maximum allowed.

If you carry more liquids than I do then the Medium set may be a better option, or a combination of these two. Again the small set has two 60’s and 100 ml, which are 2 oz, and 3.4 oz respectively. But again, these only come in sets of 4 so you couldn’t for example, buy several of the 100 ml size tubs.

Large Set Use

The large set I think is a little too big for travel. They’re over the limit for liquids and the full set is a little bulky, if all you have is carry on bnackpack. I find the large set works much better for snacks. They’re made from food grade plastic, so you can store anything in these and they’re not going to leak. I’ve been taking them hiking, they work great with nuts, fruit, apples, and peanut butter.

They would also work great for camping, or anywhere where you want to store a variety of different foods. For example these would be great for pre-chopping all the ingredients for a taco night! And the fact that they all clip together in a unit makes them easy to transport.

Summary

I really like the Humangear Stax containers. They’re extremely lightweight, totally waterproof, and have a ton of functionality. The small and medium set work better for travel and the large set works great for storing snacks for camping or hiking. The only downside I’ve found for these is the lids can pop off when you’re disconnecting them. So you need to be careful and hold the lid when you’re taking them apart.

And they’re also kind of expensive, at about $13 for the small, 17 for medium, and 22 for the large. This can be a good investment if you plan on using them a lot. They’re sturdy, I think they’re going to last a long time and they have a lifetime warranty. The liquid storage works great, I think it’s worth the cost for those. However, if you’re using them for store snacks there are cheaper options that work almost as well, like a ziplock bag.
